Not Somerset Council
This is the single most useful thing to know about local services here. North Somerset has been a unitary authority since 1996 and is entirely separate from Somerset Council, even though the name and the postal addresses suggest otherwise. Bin rounds, planning, car parks and council tax here are set by North Somerset Council alone. Everything on this site about services applies to that authority, and we say so rather than letting anyone assume.
The two halves
Weston-super-Mare is the largest town and where the council is based, with Worle and Uphill alongside it and the seafront economy that comes with a resort. Portishead, Clevedon and Nailsea are Bristol commuter towns with a different housing market and a different set of concerns. Yatton, Congresbury, Winscombe and the Mendip-edge villages sit between them. We write about them by name rather than as one place.
What we report
North Somerset Council’s planning register and committee papers, licensing notices, police.uk crime data, HM Land Registry sold prices, Food Standards Agency hygiene ratings, Environment Agency flood and coastal warnings for the levels and the Channel coast, and company filings in The Gazette. Some strategic transport and housing decisions are taken at West of England combined authority level rather than by the council, and we say which is which.
