Worle High Street works run from Monday 5 October to spring 2027. The Scaurs and Ebdon Road go one-way that day, and a 20mph limit is on the way.

The main works on Worle High Street start on Monday 5 October and run until spring 2027. Two roads change direction on the first day:

  • The Scaurs becomes one-way northbound
  • Ebdon Road becomes one-way southbound

North Somerset Council announced the start date on 23 September. It says the scheme will improve safety, accessibility and “the look and feel” of the high street (North Somerset Council, 23 September 2026).

What the scheme includes

The council lists these works:

  • new and upgraded pedestrian crossings along the High Street, plus a new crossing on Station Road
  • road and pavement resurfacing on the High Street where needed
  • a 20mph speed limit on the High Street and the roads around it
  • new bus shelters with more seating, real-time information and green roofs
  • wider footways, and raised crossings that run continuously across side-road junctions
  • new or improved footways on The Scaurs and Ebdon Road, alongside the one-way changes
  • new signs at the entry points to the High Street
  • new seating, planting and secure cycle parking at The Maltings, and a repaved precinct

Councillor Hugh Malyan, the cabinet member for highways and transport, said the changes “have been shaped directly by community feedback”. The council held its engagement on the High Street between autumn 2023 and winter 2024 (North Somerset Council, Worle High Street scheme page).

That scheme page is out of date. When we checked it on 28 September, it still said “no formal decisions have been made on a specific scheme or design yet”. The 23 September announcement is the council’s latest word.

The junction works are overrunning

Work at the Nutwell Road and Greenwood Road junctions with the High Street began in the summer holidays. It was timed so that access to Mendip Green Primary School would be disrupted while the school was closed.

In July the council said this phase would start on 27 July and “last for approximately 6 weeks”, which pointed to early September (North Somerset Council, 21 July 2026).

The 23 September announcement adds the Martins Grove junction. It says the junction work will now be finished during the October half-term. In North Somerset that is 26 to 30 October (see our October half-term page), so the phase will have run for about three months. The council has not said why it is taking longer. The autumn term started in September, so the work now overlaps the school run.

Timeline of the Worle High Street works: junction works at Nutwell Road and Greenwood Road started 27 July 2026 and were planned to last about six weeks; the main works and the one-way changes on The Scaurs and Ebdon Road start on Monday 5 October; the junction works are due to finish in the October half-term, 26 to 30 October; the main works finish in spring 2027

Why it starts now

The main works were due to start earlier. In July the council moved them back so they would not overlap with the East Street closure in Banwell, part of the Banwell bypass, whose diversion ran through Worle. East Street reopened on 28 August. We track that and the other closures on our North Somerset roadworks and travel page.

Worle drivers will still have plenty around them this autumn:

  • the council’s junction improvements on Queensway and the B3440 are still running, and National Highways has warned they may add to congestion
  • the M5 at junction 21 is down to three narrow lanes each way at 50mph for the St Georges Bridge repairs, with average speed cameras
  • the M5 southbound carriageway between the junction 21 slips closes overnight until 2 October, sending traffic off and back on at the junction

What it means for you

  • From Monday 5 October, check the direction before you turn. Use The Scaurs northbound only and Ebdon Road southbound only.
  • Drop in with questions. The contractor’s drop-in centre is at the site compound near the junction of Queensway and Walford Avenue. It is open every Wednesday, 8am to 4pm.
  • Email the scheme team at bsip.engagement@n-somerset.gov.uk for general enquiries.
  • Allow extra time on the Mendip Green Primary run until the junction works finish in half-term.
  • Planning a move or a delivery on the High Street? The council has not yet published a phase-by-phase plan of which stretch is dug up when. We will add it when it does.
