Two North Somerset food businesses were rated zero and 11 rated 1 since July, while 101 got top marks. Every low rating named, with the date and address.

North Somerset Council’s food inspectors gave out 147 hygiene ratings between 1 July and 22 September. 101 of them were the top rating of 5. Twenty businesses were rated 2 or below. Two of those were rated zero, which means urgent improvement is necessary.

Both zeros were given in July: to a cafe on Station Road in Clevedon and a takeaway on Mendip Avenue in Worle. Both now show a new rating pending on the register.

Every rating here comes from the Food Standards Agency register for North Somerset Council, which we read on Tuesday 29 September. Each business name links to its own entry. We have not run a hygiene roundup before, so this one covers the whole summer.

Why September looks spotless

Every one of the 30 ratings dated September so far is a 4 or a 5. Treat that with care.

A business rated below 5 has 21 days to appeal, so lower ratings tend to reach the register a few weeks after the visit. A 5 can go up straight away. All 20 ratings of 2 or below in this roundup were given in July and August, and September’s low scores, if there were any, are likely to surface in October.

Rated 0: urgent improvement necessary

Business Address Type Rated
Lotus Katsu Chef Unit 4 Mendip Avenue, Worle, BS22 6HN Takeaway 1 Jul
Jenny’s Cafe 4 Station Road, Clevedon, BS21 6NH Restaurant or cafe 21 Jul

The register also publishes the inspector’s scores behind each rating, where 0 is best. Jenny’s Cafe scored 25 for food hygiene and safety, the worst mark available on that element. Lotus Katsu Chef scored 20 for hygiene, 15 for the structure of the premises and 20 for confidence in management.

Both entries are flagged “new rating pending”. That usually means the business has asked to be inspected again after making improvements.

Congresbury has three low ratings from the summer: The Old Inn at 1, and The Plough Inn and Emzz BBQ Kebab & Pizza House at 2.

A low rating is a judgement on the day of the inspection. Any business can appeal, ask to be re-inspected once it has made the improvements, or publish its own response on its register entry. None of the businesses above has published a response on the register. If any of them wants to tell us what has changed since, we will add it here.

Rated 5: very good

The 101 top ratings run from motorway services to hospices. They include:

School and nursery kitchens did well. The Aspens kitchens at Kewstoke Primary, All Saints East Clevedon, St Nicholas Chantry and Nailsea School were all rated 5. So were the Chartwells kitchen at Clevedon School and six nurseries, pre-schools and children’s centres.

Four businesses at Gordano services were rated 5 in early September. The Subway at the same services was rated 1 on 28 July.

How the district compares

Across all 1,553 North Somerset food businesses with a current numeric rating, 1,175 are rated 5. That is 76%. Just 29 are rated 2 or below.

The summer’s inspections run lower, at 69% fives. That is normal: inspectors visit riskier and newer businesses more often, so recent ratings rarely look as good as the whole register.

What it means for you

  • Check before you order. Search any business by name on the FSA ratings site. Delivery apps show the rating too, but not always the latest one.
  • A pending rating is worth watching. If a business you use is rated low but flagged pending, look again in a few weeks.
  • Report a problem. If you think a business has a hygiene problem, use the FSA’s report a food problem service.
